Are You Ready To #FILLTHEGAP?
Gap Got Your Tongue is an initiative aimed at bridging the gap between the LGBTQ+ community and healthcare providers. Compared to the majority, those who identify as LGBTQ+ are at a higher risk for conditions concerning both physical and mental health. The stigma associated with being a member of this community also affects the quality of care made available to them. Thus, LGBTQ+ folk have a higher likelihood of acquiring health-related issues, and a lower likelihood of obtaining the help that they need. To date, the research conducted has largely revolved around the reasons LGBTQ+ individuals may have for not actively seek out medical attention. However, Gap Got Your Tongue is interested in filling in the rest of the narrative. What specifically can be done to alleviate the situation from the perspective of those affected by the health disparity? What do medical professionals believe the root of the problem to be? What do they believe can be done?
